What kinds of STD's are there?

There are many kinds of STD's. Each has it’s own symptoms and varying degrees of seriousness. As the symptoms of many STD's take time to develop, an infected person may unwittingly pass on the infection to others . By being aware of the kinds of STD and the signs to look for, you may them earlier and, better still, avoid contracting them in the first place.
STD's fall under four main headings - Bacterial, Viral, Parasites, and Protozoal. Please see the STD descriptions list for comprehensive information regarding each STD:

Bacterial (caused by bacteria)

  • Chancroid (Haemophillius ducreyi)
  • Chlamidia infection (Chlamydia trachomatis)
  • Donovanosis (Granuloma inguinale or Calymmatobacterium granulomatis)
  • Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae)
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) (Chlamydia trachomatis)
  • Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) (Ureaplasma urealyticum or Mycoplasma hominis)
  • Syphilis (Treponema pallidum)

Viral (caused by a virus)

  • Cytomegalovirus
  • Hepatitis B. Note that Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C are transmitted via the fecal-oral route, not sexually; Hepatitis C is rarely sexually transmittable, and the route of transmission of Hepatitis D is uncertain, but may include sexual transmission.
  • Herpes /HSV (Herpes simplex virus)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV/AIDS)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Certain strains of HPV cause genital warts
  • Certain strains of HPV cause cervical dysplasias which can lead to cervical cancer
  • Molluscum (MC)
  • Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)

Parasites (An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a persons body.)

  • Pubic lice a.k.a "crabs" (Phthirius pubis)
  • Scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei)

Protozoal (caused by a large group of single-celled, usually microscopic, organisms)

  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis)
